Ken Wakia is a graduate of Kenyatta University Nairobi, Kenya. In addition, he studied choral conducting as a Fulbright Scholar with Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe at the University of Miami, Florida, USA, where he was one of the conductors of the university’s women’s choir. From 1997 to 2000, he represented Kenya as a singer in the World Youth Choir and was one of the two choir directors of this choir in 2017.
Ken began his choral conducting career at Kenyatta University, where Annetta Miller was his mentor. He is the founder and director of the Nairobi Chamber Chorus, an internationally renowned ensemble from the Kenyan capital, and the Safaricom Choir. In addition, Ken has conducted choirs in the U.S. and Europe, including the World Youth Choir in 2017 on its tour of the Balkans. He is president of the Kenyan Choral Conductors Association. In addition to his multi-faceted musical activities, he is a cultural and educational cooperation specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, where he drives educational and cultural projects locally and internationally.
